EU Safety Gate · Report-2008-4

Mayer Chess · Oil lamp in the form of a dragon

The notified products pose a chemical risk because:- there is no wick guard to make the wick inaccessible to young children, - the wick holder and the filler opening are not secured with a closure requiring two independent movements to open it (pressing and twisting movement), i.e. there is no bayonet joint. Ingestion by children of lamp oil by sucking on the wick may prove fatal. The products also pose a risk of fire because:- there is a risk of oil leakage,- the lamp filled with lamp oil is very top-heavy, which could cause it to tip over allowing oil to leak out (since there is no leakage prevention mechanism) and resulting in a major fire. The product does not comply with the relevant European standard EN 14059. Similar products have caused five deaths and over 700 accidents in Germany.
