The product poses a health risk because it contains Pyemotes sp., a mite which is capable of biting humans and causing those handling infested material to develop serious pruritic dermatitis, characterised by vesicles which cause secondary infections when they burst. In rare cases those affected may suffer headaches, vomiting, diarrhoea and anorexia in addition to dermatitis.15 cases reported.
