The shape, colour and shininess of the stones make them very similar in appearance to pieces of jelly or other jelly-like confectionary. The sharp protuberances, some of which have a barb-like appearance, mean that children who confuse these decorative stones with food and put them in their mouth or swallow them run the risk of injury to their mouth, throat, oesophagus, stomach or intestine.
